Engagement Party

Thomas and Bell

Thomas and Belle’s engagement party was today at Raaga in DC. I posted the photos of the cakes and now I can add some from the party to go with the cakes. I didn’t get any of our side of the family but, you know what we look like. It was awesome Indian food and we got to meet Belle’s immediate family. We had a really great time and look forward to more family get togethers with them before the October 21st, 2011 wedding.

Mimi, Belle’s mom, brought three really beautiful flower arrangements and had put them in vases that were the colors that Belle thinks she wants to use at the wedding. Orange, brown and turquoise. One arrangement had hydrangeas, one was orange and yellow roses and one was sunflowers and beautiful fall colored flowers. Mimi also brought the wine and it was really nice of the restaurant to allow us to bring in some of our own items.

In the middle of the dinner, Belle’s grandmother’s boyfriend recited the poem by Elizabeth Barret Browning,

How Do I Love Thee?

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Of course, Mimi and I were both wiping our eyes. It was very moving.

Thomas cutting the devil's food cake.

After everyone finished with their lunch, Thomas started cutting the cakes and passed slices out. I brought some of the take out boxes that Herb and I bought for homemade Christmas goodies, (you have to buy a box of 100, so I have lots) That way we could share the cake with everyone and not have to bring cake home.

Then it was time for photo taking. (eventually I will be able to get a photo of everyone that was there that the waiter took for us). Belle has a very warm and friendly family and it was great to finally get to meet them and sit down to a meal with them to get to know each other. I suppose this means the wedding planning is officially underway!
